Spring/Fall Gear List - New England Hiking

This was prepared for Spring or Fall hiking in the northeast United States, the White Mountains in particular for mainly below treeline activites.It should be suitable for up to 4 day long trips, Items not needed while day hiking are marked with a *.

Pack
Pack - Internal or external frame (just a day pack for day hikes)
Shelter
Tent* - with groundcloth, and pegs

Sleep
Sleeping pad* - A foam or inflatable backpacking mattress
Sleeping bag* - inside a plastic bag inside a stuff sack

Clothing
Rain Jacket - must be wind/waterproof
Rain Pants
Socks - not cotton(preferably wool with liners) 2 sets
Hat - fleece/wool
gloves - thin pair for camp use + shells for snow/rain
gaitors - keep out the snow/mud/rain
Long sleeve shirt - Light weight fleece, wool, or nylon, can be worn externally
on the trail
Long sleeve shirt* - Medium weight fleece or wool - not cotton
Long sleeve shirt - Heavy weight fleece - not cotton
Hiking Boots
Shorts* - preferably not cotton
Pants - zip offs work good - preferably not cotton
t shirt* - can be cotton, but less cotton is better 2
long underwear top
underwear* - preferably not cotton

Kitchen
Water Treatment - Pump or Iodine Tablets (for the group)
Pocketknife
Fire Starter - Matches in a waterproof container
Water - 2+ quarts
Food - for meals, and snacks - gorp, etc
Mess kit* - bowl, spoon and cup
cooking pot* - (for the group)
stove* - (for the group - per 3-4 people)
